The Science Education Partnership (SEP) creates active partnerships between secondary science teachers and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, connecting teachers with scientists, the multiple resources of the Center, and local corporate and academic partner institutions. Initiated in 1991 through a collaboration of teachers and scientists, this richly textured professional development program engages teachers in hands-on workshops, individual research experiences with mentor scientists, pedagogical content knowledge development, lesson preparation, and classroom use of molecular biology kits and resources.
The program intends to add 25 new teachers each year to the group of approximately 250 middle and high school teachers already being served. The partnership provides alumni teachers with a vibrant professional learning community as well as ongoing technical support, kit and resource loans, newsletters, website access, and workshops.
