In 1994 HHMI awarded the Washington University School of Medicine $300,000 to create a Young Scientist Program to address the needs of economically disadvantaged high school juniors from the St. Louis City Public Schools. The program provides ways for students and teachers to interact with medical school faculty. The three components already under way include (1) Summer Focus, a series of one-on-one tutorials followed by an eight-week internship in biomedical research for juniors, in which two graduate students are assigned to each high school student for the entire summer, (2) Science Partners, which pairs sophomore high school students with graduate and medical students to create sustained mentor-student relationships, and (3) Teaching Teams, which brings interactive scientific demonstrations and workshops to city public high school classrooms. Also, a Summer Internship in Science provides high school teachers with two eight-week laboratory research internships and curriculum development.
