In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Utah School of Medicine $325,000 for a collaboration between the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics and the Utah Museum of Natural History to develop a curriculum, the Natural History of Genes. The three components of the proposal include the development of junior and senior high school curricula, teacher training, and hands-on laboratory experiences in genetics for students. The goals are to teach the basic principles of genetics, to explain techniques of DNA analysis, and to demonstrate how DNA data can be applied to problems in conservation genetics, human diversity, forensics, and the genetics of disease. The junior high curriculum and kits are developed by teachers and university scientists. An educational advisory committee includes participants from local school districts, including representatives of Navajo, Ute, and Hispanic communities.
