In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Southern California School of Medicine $200,000 in support of its collaboration with the adjacent Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the aims of which are to increase scientific literacy in biomedical sciences and heighten awareness of findings in biomedical research among innercity students. The program (1) enhances both students' and teachers' knowledge of biomedical science and research, (2) incorporates biotechnology and basic laboratory techniques in several existing courses, (3) promotes interaction among the faculties of the medical school and the high school, and (4) increases interest of students in biomedical research and medicine. The projects involve both teachers and students, with emphasis placed on student summer research experiences in medical school laboratories and development of hands-on experiments in existing classes at Bravo. Curricular materials are shared among the science faculty at Bravo and other high schools within Los Angeles.
