In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of South Dakota School of Medicine $175,000 in support of its INSTEP program, an effort to attract South Dakota Native American high school students into careers in medicine and other health care professions. The proposal complements existing efforts to develop an education pipeline beginning at the secondary school level, extending to undergraduate education, and concluding with application to and matriculation in health care professions programs. The EXPLORE and APPRENTICE summer components expose students to career choices in medicine and science through mentoring experiences with physicians and other health care professionals, involvement in the biomedical research environment, involvement in health care delivery systems on and off the reservations, and interaction with state agencies concerned with Indian health.
