In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Nevada School of Medicine $200,000 to prepare secondary school teachers to teach scientific content and method. A Hughes Teacher Fellow Training program consists of a series of five Saturday workshops followed by a two-week summer workshop for science teachers from high schools in Reno and Las Vegas. Content focuses on the biomedical sciences, including physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry. Teachers develop an interactive, hands-on science lesson to take back to their classrooms and receive funds to purchase the necessary supplies to incorporate this experimental component into their classrooms. Teach the Teacher Workshops provide workshops developed by a group of medical school faculty and the teacher fellows to reach out to science teachers around the state. A laboratory equipment component equips laboratories at each partner high school for the teacher workshops and student programs, trains teachers in how to use the equipment, and helps teachers incorporate the equipment into their curricula.
