In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) $175,000 to expand the scope of Base Pair, a research mentorship program between junior and senior high school students from the Jackson Public School District and the medical center. The program prepares students for advanced laboratory research and trains them in performing it. Trainees also function as laboratory tutors in high school laboratory activities designed to upgrade public school teaching capabilities. In addition, teacher programs bring public school faculty to a summer research institute at the medical school to design, test, and implement laboratory exercises. Four content areas--molecular biology, environmental toxicology, chemistry, and Internet communication-are being developed by UMC faculty and teachers for establishment in the public schools. A summer research institute for teachers recruits one teacher per summer for an eight-week period.
