In 1994 HHMI awarded UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School $175,000 for a summer enrichment program for eighth graders and their teachers, with two interrelated components: (1) exposure for 15 innercity Newark minority children per year to the medical school's research environment and (2) inclusion of three elementary school teachers per year as an integral part of the summer program. The program, Biotrek: The Way to Go, takes advantage of the natural interests of this age group in dance, sports, and recreational activities. Students and teachers, working in small groups, explore biological processes involved in these activities, namely neuromuscular contraction, nutrition, digestive metabolism, respiratory and cardiovascular function, and cell physiology. Educational approaches include hands-on research, computer-assisted learning, clinical and research laboratory exposure, field trips, and oral and written presentations.
