In 1994 HHMI awarded the Wake Forest University School of Medicine $400,000 to create science education partnerships in three surrounding counties, by pairing medical school faculty and staff with local science teachers. The partnerships develop teaching units to address a variety of biology topics in the context of real-life cases for students to solve. The approach is modeled on the problem-based learning curriculum for first and second year students in the School of Medicine and is consistent with the State Systemic Initiative for science education reform. Cases are being developed and implemented throughout the academic year. New teams of teachers will be trained each year, and contact will be maintained with all teachers who have participated. Extensive evaluation will be conducted.
