In 1994 HHMI awarded East Carolina School of Medicine $250,000 in support of the Science Education Partnership Program, the aim of which is to increase the interest of rural and minority high school students in biomedicine. Five program components are involved: (1) nine-month research experiences for selected high school honors students from seven high schools; (2) a lecture series for honors students, science students, and teachers in local high schools; (3) research opportunities for selected high school science teachers; (4) a summer science institute for training additional science teachers from surrounding counties; and (5) an evaluation of the program's impact on past participants. For the past 10 years, East Carolina has had a voluntary cooperative program for high school students, on which this program expands and builds. As part of the project, a survey will determine the academic and career paths of high school seniors who participated during the program's previous 10 years. An additional component is the development of an animal behavior curriculum in cooperation with the fourth- and fifth-grade teachers for Advanced and gifted students.
