In 1994 HHMI awarded Morehouse School of Medicine $325,000 to increase and stimulate the interest of minority students of the Atlanta, Fulton County, and DeKalb County school systems in the biomedical sciences. The central administrator of the program is the Science Education Resources Center on the Morehouse campus. The center builds on initiatives already developed at the medical school to encourage high school students to explore careers in medicine and biomedical science. The program continues and expands student research opportunities; a mentoring program involving Atlanta University Center medical students, science majors, and area schoolchildren; a Saturday Science Academy; summer science camps; and science clubs. A key ingredient in this program is the training of science majors from local historically black colleges to conduct hands-on science in elementary school classrooms. In addition to providing instruction, these students serve as mentors and role models for large numbers of African-American children in after-school programs and in local churches.
