In 1994 HHMI awarded Temple University School of Medicine $175,000 for continuation and expansion of a program in which scientists at the School of Medicine have been teamed with precollege educators to construct 38 teaching modules (e.g., hands-on laboratory exercises, computer programs, lesson plans) for introduction in their classrooms. The medical school provides (1) workshops on hands-on laboratory experiences, using the 38 teaching modules previously developed and classroom tested by the teachers currently involved in the program; (2) dissemination networks for the materials throughout the Delaware Valley; (3) a lending library of small equipment, chemicals, cultures, and media for use by teachers; (4) a network for peer group interaction to exchange curricular ideas and materials; and (5) an extension of partnerships already established between scientists and teachers.
