In 1994 HHMI awarded Ponce School of Medicine $300,000 to provide elementary and high school science teachers in southern Puerto Rico with science education activities and innovative methods in the teaching of science and to improve teachers' working knowledge in the fields of biology, earth sciences, space sciences, and ecology. Teachers are also trained in curriculum development. The program consists of 12 months of enrichment activities, including six weeks in the summer and an activity once a month during the following academic year. Activities include conferences, laboratory practice sessions, excursions to distinct tropical environments, hands-on classroom activities, and demonstrations. The six-week summer course focuses on special topics, with presentations by faculty and guest speakers. Efforts are made to be cognizant of limited resources available to these teachers in their home institutions and to be consistent with state education reform initiatives.
