In 1994 HHMI awarded the Research Foundation $325,000 to develop novel instructional tools that Oklahoma high school science teachers can use to introduce their students to biological research. Classic molecular genetics experiments are provided to instruct students in the fundamental properties of living systems related to genes, mutations, and heredity. The proposal has two components: (1) an annual, eight-week summer training course for four teachers each year at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and (2) development and dissemination of instructional materials, including an electronic network, based on the course. The summer institute is carried out in the Laboratory of Molecular and Cell Biology at the Research Foundation. Additional faculty and a teacher participant from a previous year of a similar program take part. Efforts are made to provide teachers with relatively inexpensive laboratory options.
