In 1994 HHMI awarded the foundation $175,000 for curriculum development and teacher training in biotechnology to provide science education outreach to high schools in Maine, using the expertise and experience of its scientific and educational staff. Teachers have access to content and laboratory exercises through a teaching manual produced as a result of teacher training institutes. The manual, which will focus on immunology, will be a product of collaboration between teachers and scientists. The institutes bring teachers together for three weeks at a time for lectures, workshops, curriculum development, and laboratories. Two-day update sessions are conducted during the academic year. Following field testing and revision, 250 copies of the manual will be printed for distribution to Maine's high school biology teachers. Teachers who participate in the teacher training institutes in biotechnology will develop classroom and laboratory materials, which will be incorporated into an additional manual.
