In 1994 HHMI awarded Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center $250,000 to develop in-school science centers in the elementary school buildings of three public school districts with varying racial and socioeconomic populations. The Elementary School Science Centers are in-school teaching laboratories and are fully equipped with such items as laboratory benches, stools, lab coats, microscopes, and other supplies. Both elementary school teachers and "expert demonstrators" facilitate hands-on activities in the Science Centers. "Expert demonstrators" are school district middle and high school science teachers and non-school district volunteer science, health, and technology professionals from Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center and neighboring institutions and businesses. All hands-on demonstrations are integrated into elementary-grade-level curricula. The medical center has developed a demonstrator lending library equipped with specialized anatomical models. Nine high school students are enlisted for paid summer research internships in medical center laboratories.
