In 1994 HHMI awarded the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons $250,000 to provide secondary school science teachers with practical experiences in research in modern biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, and earth sciences. The goal is to provide sustained (two-year) involvement of science teachers with research laboratories and with practicing scientists. Applications are accepted from any teacher currently employed full time as a science teacher in any school within the City of New York. The teachers work full time in laboratories for up to nine weeks during each of two consecutive summers and may return during the academic year to conduct experiments and seek advice. In addition to receiving a summer stipend, teachers are provided with an enrichment fund to purchase equipment and/or supplies for their classrooms, to take students on trips, or to attend national meetings. Teachers also receive a modem for their school computer and a two-year subscription to America Online, an Internet provider.
