In 1994 HHMI awarded $175,000 to Brigham and Women's Hospital for Labworks, a partnership among the Hospital, the Brookline (Massachusetts) Public Schools, and World Education, Inc. Labworks provides 11 laboratory-centered activities for students within research laboratories at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching and research hospital. Reproducible science project kits are being created, including supporting documentation, data formatted on computer disks, and case studies. Through an arrangement with the Atlanta Public Schools, materials and kits developed through Labworks will be field tested in an innercity middle school, to evaluate the adaptability of the design. Teacher development activities include summer internships to expand teachers' experiences as scientists working in a clinical or research laboratory. Teacher training focuses on adapting curriculum design and dissemination. Minigrants are available to teachers to help them expand ideas, obtain curricular materials, and supplement supplies.
