In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Washington School of Medicine $200,000 for Molecular Biotechnology Integrated Science Partners, an outreach program for middle school students and teachers, designed to provide new hands-on, inquiry-based curricula in biology, technology and medicine, chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics. The three major components of the program are teacher training, curriculum development, and student activities. Through teacher training, teachers work with laboratory scientists during a two-week summer workshop. As a result of these experiences, teachers develop new curricula and laboratory modules to be disseminated locally and, perhaps, nationally. The new curricula developed during the summer workshop are tested by the lead teachers and scientists and incorporated into modules for student use. Each year teachers participating in the summer program are provided with the modules in kit form, consisting of sufficient equipment and supplies for use in three classes per year. At the end of the five-year grant, partner teachers and students in the Puget Sound area will have access to these programs and materials.
