In 1994 HHMI awarded the university $175,000 in support of the SciCon Project, which targets sixth- through eighth-grade students from one minority Chicago public school. Major program components include hands-on science activities for students through the use of school-based working laboratories, a monthly speakers forum that brings scientists to schools, science clubs, and in-classroom support for teachers through the use of university science students as teaching assistants. Parents are involved through planned school functions, orientation sessions, monthly meetings, community activities, and yearly progress reports. Content areas include biomedical, chemical, and physical science and are presented through experiments, long-term science projects, field trips, and small group discussions.
