In 1994 HHMI awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical Center $175,000 for partnerships between scientists and health professionals from the medical center and one-quarter of Worcester's school population, including 335 teachers and over 5,000 students and their families. Through partnerships with students, scientists bring hands-on exploratory activities into classrooms and provide sites for student tours and internships. Workshops, internships, and one-on-one relationships between teachers and scientists contribute to teacher development and expose scientists to student-based activities and pedagogy. Through partnerships with the community, scientists promote family science activities in community centers, religious sites, and other locales.
