In 1994 HHMI awarded Georgetown University Medical Center $175,000 for Biotechnology Collaborative Research and Education (BIOCORE) Partnerships, a teacher training and outreach program in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The primary objective is to meet the need for biotechnology training for precollege teachers and to provide them with the necessary skills to incorporate biotechnology into the current science curriculum. A total of 20 teachers will be selected to participate in the project during the five-year period. They are being trained in workshops, followed by a summer experience in a research laboratory. Medical center faculty are recruited and selected on the basis of their willingness and commitment to contribute time, expertise, and laboratory resources to the program.
