In 1994 HHMI awarded Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York $350,000 to establish a BioScience Studies Institute (BSSI) to provide year-round science education for students and faculty of the newly formed Queens Gateway to the Health Sciences Secondary School. BSSI is a collaboration of the high school, the medical school, the Queens Hospital Center, and the City Hospital Center of Elmhurst. The BSSI programs use curricula that are both novel and standard?developed collaboratively among Mount Sinai and QHC scientists/physicians and high school teachers. The students explore careers in science and are involved in hands-on laboratory experiences. Working with biomedical science experts, teachers develop instructional modules for use in BSSI. Every summer of the grant, teachers and administrators work with Mount Sinai scientists. Teacher development, curriculum development, and student progress is assessed on a continuous basis.
