In 1994 HHMI awarded $375,000 to the Science Connection Program, a partnership between Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Timilty Middle School, which is located in Roxbury, an innercity area of Boston. The program engages minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged middle school students, with a focus on girls from Boston, in scientific inquiry and encourages these students to pursue careers in science. The proposed program involves (1) an extensive mentoring component, (2) special science classes and field trips, (3) hands-on laboratory classes at the Timilty Middle School, (4) Speakers Bureau, (5) Family Science Activity Nights, (6) Summer Science Camp for Timilty students, (7) four-week summer fellowship programs for Timilty teachers, and (8) curriculum development. All activities are designed to supplement the regular school curriculum in general science, physical science, and life science. The women MGH mentors are paired with girls, and effective methods for teaching science to girls are emphasized.
