In 1994 HHMI awarded the DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor $400,000 to support its further development of a program on genetics and cell biology and the impacts of basic research on human health. The program starts with a sequenced genetics instruction component - a coordinated, vertical integration of experiential learning in elementary, middle, and high school education. The DNA Learning Center will use small school districts as proving grounds for new curriculum materials, then adapt them for use in the New York metropolitan area. A research intern component for ninth-grade students will provide specialized training and laboratory experiences. The Biomedia Component establishes a genetics education computer node to provide educators with online access to genetics educational materials, shared student databases, and educational gateways to genome databases. The Human Genetic Diversity - Student Database component will allow high school students to participate actively in an international research project on human variability and population genetics.
