In 1994 HHMI awarded $200,000 to the Science Education Partnership (SEP) Program, founded as a partnership between the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) and the San Francisco Unified School District. Scientist volunteers work with teachers and students in hands-on scientific investigation. Teachers participate through individual partnerships with scientists, have access to a resources center, receive donated supplies and equipment, and can request classroom presentations by UCSF scientists. Students participate directly through an annual Science and Health Lesson Plan Contest, through interaction with scientists in the classroom, and through the SEP Summer Internship Program for high school students. The programs are open to all teachers and students in San Francisco public schools.
