In 1994 HHMI awarded the Boston University School of Medicine $300,000 to expand the activities of CityLab, a centralized high school biomedical laboratory facility developed on campus in 1990 by the Boston University School of Medicine. CityLab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for students to conduct hands-on biology activities. CityLab traditionally targets students from the Boston and Greater Boston Schools on a first-come, first-served basis and is free of charge. The program serves primarily sophomore, junior, and senior high school students and their teachers. Under the expanded program, the School of Medicine is establishing a second CityLab laboratory, available to 3,000 students per year. The program is also developing new curricula modules, expanding outreach, including the establishment of CityLab satellites, and beginning an interactive telecommunications program between CityLab and participating schools. After-school programs for students, including a Biotechnology Club, are being established.
