The Partnership for Cancer Research Education will help students improve their understanding of science and their scientific inquiry skills by making use of Fox Chase Cancer Center's expertise in applying basic, medical, and behavioral research to combat cancer. To achieve this objective, teachers and students will be partnered with Fox Chase scientists to work on real, ongoing cancer research projects. Students in a class will reivew the scientist's research, ask a question, design experiments (to be done by the students if possible, or by the scientist), analyze the resulting data, draw conclusions, and come up with new questions to repeat the inquiry process over a full school year. Students will then share their experience with the community. Individual students who develop an interest in research will be able to work in Fox Chase labs for a year. Projects will be codesigned by teachers and scientists to ensure sound pedagogy and scientific method, and will be supported by the following: 1. Professional development to enhance teachers' scientific and pedagogical skills. 2. A workshop on teaching skills to aid scientists' communication with students. 3. A Program Director with experience in both research and education to help the scientist/teacher partners work with students. 4. Student and program assessment to direct improvement of the program.
