The BUILD A HUMAN Precollege Project will have three components: 1) Student Activities: A 2-week, plus one day (Saturday morning), summer workshop for incoming 7th and 8th grade students to allow them to investigate and explore the structure and function of the human from the molecular level to the level of the whole organism. Age-appropriate, stimulating, challenging experiences will include hands-on activities, observation of embryonic chick development, interactive demonstrations by biomedical researchers, participation in laboratory experiences with biomedical scientists, and construction of computer and functional models of the body and its systems. 2) Teacher Professional Development: Teacher Participants will attend morning workshop sessions with the students, and in addition will attend afternoon sessions that will provide inservice training as well as opportunities to work alongside biomedical researchers in the Creighton and affiliated hospital laboratory sites. Teacher Particpants will receive three hours of graduate credit in education by their participation and classroom implementation of a final project. 3) Cross-Cutting Activities: Following each summer workshop, kits will be available for check-out for Teacher Participants to use in their classrooms and schools. At the end of four summers, a total of nine kits will be available. Each kit will consist of functional models of the human body, including separate models for each of the following five systems: nervous, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, digestive, and respiratory systems. Community/family outreach activities will include a daily "House Calls" feature and a final-day presentation to peers, families, and the wider community.
