CityLab's award allows it to continue its efforts fostering an appreciation of biotechnology for middle and high school students and their teachers. The program reaches thousands of students each year providing hands-on scientific exporation in the biosciences. CityLab will continue to conduct teacher workshops in the summer and over the academic year, as well as continue its 9-month CityLab Academy program. Ongoing student and teacher outreach is the primary activity, providing a resource often lacking in school districts.
A CityLab Scholars program will identify qualified students to participate in even deeper CityLab experiences over a longer time period. The CityLab Scholars program focuses on enriching and expanding two programs at CityLab - the Biotechnology Camp and the Biotechnology Club, and adding a Summer Research program. These programs will create a pathway for motivated students to pursue the biosciences over a three to four year period and hopefully will lead to further education and careers in biotechnology. The programs currently offered are in such demand that we now aim to increase dissemination efforts nationwide, using telecommunication, establishing CityLab satellites, and using the MobileLab. Dissemination efforts to date have been successful, but need to be increased.
