The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD SOM)will expand and strengthen "Education for the Future," one of five components of the UCSD SOM Community Outreach Partnership Center. Activities are designed to increase the quantity and quality of science education in participating schools by conducting science programs and increasing student access to quality teachers, community resource and informed parents. The Precollege Science Education Initiative will enhance and expand the Grades 5-12 activities of the existing partnership of UCSD SOM, San Diego County Department of Social Services, Department of Public Health, Department of Probation, San Diego Community College District, San Diego Unified School District, the City of San Diego Housing Commission, Neighborhood House Head Start, Mid City For Youth and other community based organizations serving children and families in City Heights, and Southeast.
These neighborhoods are in San Diego's inner city where UCSD has provided direct health services, disease prevention services, educational outreach in science and arts and conducted applied research for more than nine years. The neighborhoods are ethnically diverse -- 30% Latino; 25% European-American; 22% African American; 21% Asian/Pacific Islander; and 1% other ethnic/racial groups. Thirty-nine primary languages are spoken in area schools. In response to community needs, the Center conducts technical outreach science enrichment, teacher training and parent involvement programs in two elementary schools (G5-6), three Middle Schools, and two high schools.
