The University of Nevada School of Medicine proposes a continuing cooperative relationship among the School of Medicine, the state's two largest school districts, and both state universities. It builds upon and expands exising successful programs and proposes new initiatives to extend our successes into elementary schools. This proposal addresses three groups:
1) pre-service teachers, elementary through high school through the development of science courses designed jointly between scientists and College of Education faculty.
2) future scientists-increase the involvement of future scientists in science education through the expansion and continued development of science partners. This program pairs undergraduate science majors with elementary teachers statewide to increase hands-on science in the classroom and assist in the implementation of national and state science standards and National Science Foundation endorsed kits.
3) students in grades K-12 -- increase the interest and competency of pre-college students in science through the continuation and expansion of the High School Medical Scholars and Summer of Discovery programs. High School Medical Scholars program has been offered to rising high school seniors since 1993. This proposal seeks to continue that funding and expand it to bring back alumni of the program for educational enrichment and additional scientific and clinical experiences. Summer of Discovery is an intensive one week science experience offered to students in grades 7 through 10, and is designed to excite students about science and improve their persistence in science classes.
