The University of Mississippi School of Medicine proposes 'Base Pair,' a model biomedical research mentorship program that pairs faculty from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) with student educators from the largest public school system in the state, the Jackson Public School District (JPSD). Initiated in 1992, and supported since 1994 by HHMI, 'Base Pair' now seeks novel, technology-oriented means to expand its influence and meet an increasing demand for the educational services that it provides. This proposal details plans for structured dissemination of a science research curriculum, biomedical information resources, and interactive World Wide Web (WWW)-based communications, while maintiaing existing strengths in mentorship, curriculum development and technology utilization. Program capabilities will be enhanced by collaborations with the UMC School of Health-Related Professions (SHRP) and the Rowland Medical Library. Objectives include: 1) the development of an interactive 'Base Pair' WWW site, linked to the Rowland Medical Library global information base, which will permit a program of "Mentorship through Networking" and that will be tested at the current 'Base Pair' target site, Murrah High School, and extended to a second JPSD site, the Bailey Magnet High School for the Health-Related Professions, and 2) establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory science training facility at the UMC-SHRP (the Summer Research Institute) that will dramatically enhance the local environment for professional development of high school science teachers and inquiry-based science curriculum formulation.
The efficacy of 'Base Pair' will be documented by continuation of a record of high school student and teacher accomplishment in presentation/publication of science research in professional scientific forums, adoption of a 'Base Pair'-created science course, Biomedical Research, at high school sites, utilization of laboratory activities fostered by graduat
