The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine conducts a three-part program.
1) The High School Program, the Howard Hughes Excellence in Science Education and Learning Program (ExSel), is a sophisticated 5-week, total immersion, science enrichment summer research program for 20 gifted and talented rising 12th grade students in the Cincinnati public schools. Three academic year sessions are also held. College of Medicine faculty in the five focus areas coordinate and teach each of the one-week "mini-courses" and research experiences.
2) The Middle School Program, the Howard Hughes Saturday Science Academy, involves 30 7th and 8th grade Cincinnati public school students and their parents/partners in a year-round Saturday morning hands-on biomedical/biological science enrichment program at the College of Medicine. A different science module is presented each session, developed and conducted by the visiting scientist of the week. Emphasis is on developing critical thinking and problem solving skills, exposure to a wide variety of sciences, development of decision-making skills and educational uses of the computer and Internet.
3) The Howard Hughes Teachers Initiative: Program in Biomedical Research involves 5 middle and high school science teachers who are members of or teach large numbers of minority and/or disadvantaged students for an 8-week intensive summer laboratory research experience and periodic meetings during the academic year. Teachers meet with the scientific director weekly to discuss progress and transferability of research skills to the classroom setting and present their work at an end of the program research symposium.
