New Jersey Medical School is a component of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the state's academic health center in Newark, New Jersey. It proposes to expand, refine and strengthen an existing pre-college biology/health science educational pipeline. The goal of the proposed program is to prepare local area students to be successful in college-level science and mathematics courses so as to maximize their potential for entering careers in biological sciences and health care. A coordinated set of on-campus biology and health related activities will be the major vehicle used to achieve the goal.

Participants (students in grades 7-11, and science teachers from area schools) will engage in biology and health-related activities designed to improve science and mathematics skills, and broaden general knowledge. All summer activities will be on the campus of the medical school and involve both students (those entering grades 8-11) and pre-college science teachers in hands-on research and cooperative learning groups. A school year set of Saturday activities will also take place on the campus. Saturday outreach components have been designed for students, parents, community-at-large, teachers, school administrators and guidance counselors.

Additionally, school based programs have been designed that include a research program for 7th grade students and a career club for high school students. Research activities will be complemented by participant use of educational technology, educational field trips, clinical exposure and oral and written presentations. Sources for assessing outcomes will be test scores, surveys, checklists and longitudinal tracking systems. An advisory committee and an evaluation committee will work with the Program Director to ensure that objectives are met.
