The Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW) proposes to continue working to improve science, mathematics, and technology education for elementary age children attending Washington, DC public schools. The CIW plans include four elements. At the First Light Saturday Science School, 30 children will weekly be exposed to inquiry-based, content rich science. At the Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE), 400 elementary school teachers will attend 6-week intensive, stardards-based summer institutes on science content, pedagogy and assessment. They will bring back to their classrooms innovative ways to teach science and related mathematics as well as materials for science teaching and improved computer skills. During the school year, CASE teachers will attend monthly workshops at Carnegie and CASE staff will be regularly available in their schools for consultation and demonstrations. Through the Carnegie Model Schools program, CASE will work at 20 schools, which already have a core of CASE-trained teachers, to establish model elementary schools where children learn science and mathematics through coherent and cohesive programs that are in accord with national standards.
