This program is designed to capture the scientific interest of students early in their academic careers, supplement and expand the resources of the classroom teacher, and enlist the community in helping to reiterate the significance of science and scientific inquiry in our everyday lives. Improving science literacy is the key to economic growth and development within the Appalachian region and thereby elevating the overall quality and standard of life of the citizens. The initiative detailed in this proposal represents a well-coordinated, centralized outreach program that utilizes faculty, staff and students to form an alliance with the Appalachian community to raise the level of awareness and appreciation for the critical role of science in their everyday lives.
Four intervention programs are planned: 1) a 2-week summer science camp for 8th graders that involves innovative strategies and hands-on activities which will strengthen the students' knowledge and generate a continuing interest in the sciences; 2) a summer research experience for high school students, which introduces them to the equipment and methods of an active, productive research laboratory; 3) summer science workshops for teachers, which will motivate them to encourage more students to enter careers in the life sciences; and 4) community science camps coupled with a telecommunications follow-up system for Appalachian citizens designed to raise their level of science literacy.
