The Massachusetts General Hospital will enhance The Science Connection Program, a partnership between MGH and Boston's James P. Timilty Middle School, to create a seamless and progressive science program for teachers and students from 6th to 8th grade. The Science Connection Program, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the past four years, seeks to stimulate an interest in science and science careers, and to increase students' understanding and appreciation of science in the world around them.

This program will incorporate lessons learned over the past four years to enhance the schools' already noted science environment. This would be accomplished by integrating the key components of the program into a progressive initiative that begins in the 6th grade with 'Science in the Classroom,' continues into the 7th grade with the 'Science Career Exploration Program,' transitions in 7th grade with the 'Science Fair Mentoring Program,' and culminates in the 8th grade with a peer mentoring experience. Professional development for teachers, who must meet new Boston Public Schools science curriculum guidelines, is woven into this comprehensive approach, as are science nights for families and a science summer camp.
