The 1999 award supports The Rockefeller University's Science Outreach Program, an integrated teacher/student/scientist mentoring initiative established in 1992. Science Outreach brings K-12 teachers and high school students into Rockefeller laboratories to work directly with mentor scientists. Outreach creates a unique partnership among teachers, students and scientists that establishes a continuous interaction between the research laboratory and the classroom. Aided by our ScienTfic Reading And Writing Course (STRAW), novices learn critical communication skills while young scientists gain mentored teaching experience. Fully aligned with the National Science Education Standards, the Program is designed to help teachers and students truly engage in scientific research and learn the content and process of scientific inquiry.

The Program is at a pivotal point in its development. It has grown so significantly in size and stature, that applications far exceed the Program's ability to place candidates. Feedback from Outreach participants has helped to develop a number of new initiatives which have been well received, especially in the area of professional development for teachers. The Program seeks to continue these efforts while creating new cost-efficient ways to serve the New York City science education community.
