The 1990s have been a decade in which education reform, and especially science education reform, initiatives have exploded across the country. The University of Massachusetts Medical School has positioned itself to unleash the resources, largely faculty, staff and students, of area science/health institutions to the needs of an articulated vision of science education created by K-12 schools. Since 1993, the Medical School, affiliated with the UMass Memorial Health Center, has significantly increased its outreach to K-12 students and teachers. In particular, a partnership with the Worchester Public Schools has become fimly entrenched.

The present proposal speaks to taking prior work to a more significant level, into the domain of demonstrating student learning. To this end, the Medical School seeks to fully align its efforts with local, state and national standards and focus its partnership with Worcester on the use of standards-based curricula. The major emphasis is on the elementary classrooms of Worchester's North Quadrant, but there are extensions into evolving a vision of science education for secondary classrooms. Ultimately, 5500 students from this urban school district will be affected. Assessment of student performance and achievement are integral portions of the proposal as is the use of a new Technology Center to bring additional resources to the project.
