Challenges
- Sustainability of Tech Sites for Districts ¿ The Tech Sites have secured funding sources for the consumable materials necessary to produce the lab kits for the teachers trained in the lab activities. Mira Mesa has partnered with a local biotech company, Gen-Probe, who is providing all the costs for material production (3k). The Castle Park Site is partnering with two labs at UCSD to support tech site costs and is also using their California Partnership Academy funds to buy materials for the kits in the Sweetwater School District. The biggest issue for these centers to become completely independent in producing lab materials for their district is the distribution of the lab materials to the teachers throughout the district. Currently, SB is paying undergraduates from UCSD to deliver the kits throughout the district on delivery dates, though after the 2012-2013 school year teachers will pick up their kits from the tech sites.
- Scientist in Classroom
The biggest hurdles for this program are 1) timing of visits and time requirements based on scientist and teacher limited availability, and 2) lack of consequence if teachers or scientists don¿t follow through.
These two obstacles are inherent to the world of outreach, and the main tool to use to solve them is dedication on behalf of the ScienceBridge team. However, we also used ingenuity to create a different approach to scheduling at the schools this year that to some degree helped with both obstacles. As part of the GEAR UP partnership, each school site has a GEAR UP Coordinator, who, in addition to his or her regular duties at the school, is available to help the ScienceBridge partnership successfully implement the programs in the schools. 2011-2012 was the first year we really integrated this staff support from the summer 2011 and through the school year. Coordinators committed at the beginning of the school year to which program they would support at their school.
