Challenges
- The key challenge this year was sustainability of funding for the UCLA Pre-College Science Education Program. We reached out to various foundations for this funding, and to the UCLA Office of the Chancellor. We were fortunate to have received $700,000 for five-years, beginning July 2013, from the Chancellor Gene Block and Dr. No-Hee Park, Dean of the School of Dentistry.
- An ongoing challenge is that of recruitment and retention, as we rely on community partners for primary recruitment of students and their parents.
As we only found out on August 8 that our program would be sustained for five years, after the HHMI funding expires, we had to work quickly with our community partners to recruit students for our sixth cohort, whose Saturday Academy classes begin in late October. To date, our partners continue to recruit the 12 high school juniors who will form our sixth cohort.
