Challenges
- Students and teacher feedback indicates a desire for a more intereactive electronic field trip. In prior years, students have been able to interact with Purdue scientists by emailing questions during the live broadcast. Although a number of questions were read, and answered, on air, the vast majority of questions could not be addressed until after the live show. These questions and answers were made available on the zipTrips website. We wanted to enhance interactivity both between the students and the scientists and also among the students.
To address this challenge, we pilot tested Hotseat, a social media techology developed at Purdue Universtiy to enhance interactivity in large lecture classrooms.
- The zipTrips model has proven to be effective and popular. We are looking for sustainabiltiy models to allow us to maintain and expand zipTrips beyond the HHMI funding period. Our strategies to date have included proposals to federal agencies, foundations, industrial partners, and other donors. We have had some limited success, but haven't found the right long-term supporter to date.
