Challenge: No winter career fair or School Science Nights could be scheduled due to failure of the middle schools to accept our offer. We were unable to address this challenge.
Challenge: Recruiting APS schools and teachers to deliver the after school program. Although we have the resources to deliver the After School Program in 6 schools, which was the original intent of the program, we were only able to offer it in 2 schools. Although we approached all six of the original schools and one other, only 5 schools were interested in offering the program and two of those schools failed to identify an APS teacher to deliver the program while 1 school failed to recruit students to participate. This stems in part from the fact that two of the schools we previously served secured their own grants to offer after school career enrichment programs (covering both science and non-science careers) in 2010. We continued to tweak the curriculum with the help of input from our teachers. We added activities that they have found independently and also incorporated more activities from our summer program. Participation by Albuquerque Public Schools has been a struggle. They either have other science programs from another grant or the teachers are not interested in staying afterschool to implement program.
