Challenges
- We have been excited about the prospects of using video as a tool for advertising, documentation, teaching, and our own learning. We are finding that there are many limitations to this tool which seems easy on the surface, yet turns out to be expensive and technically demanding to do well. There are really challenging tradeoffs among spontaneity, coherence, sound quality, and telling a story in a compelling way.
- This year more of my time as director has been shifted to program marketing and fundraising, reducing the time I have to actually work with scientists, teachers, and program staff to "do" the program, evaluate the program, and disseminate the program.
- Together with two the Manufacturing Industrial Council and the Associated General Contractors Educational Foundation, we have been working to build a STEM Business Partnership with the Seattle School District over the past 14 months. District size and turnover have made this surprisingly hard. A new superintendent is now in place, but many staff we have been building relationships with have left. The first meeting with the Superintendent was promising; we are hopeful that more will be accomplished in the next few months.
