The deteriorating environment in the John S. Roberts (JSR) Educational Complex is a continued source of concern. This shared space has seen several changeovers in administration, as well as whole schools moving in and out. We are currently looking for our own space in Manhattan, in which we can "grow" our outreach programs free of these difficulties. Cold Spring Harbor Laoratory plans a $25million development campaign to fund a Manhattan DNALC. A $6million pledge has already been made.
Our teacher recruitment objectives have been impacted by the effects of the recession and major changes within the NYC DOE including the dissolution of the DOE's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) division. We continue to maintain ties with DOE contacts who have been reassigned new positions within the school system. With their help, we have developed a strong base of over 800 teachers who have participated in training at the Harlem DNA Lab, even in the face of change.
