Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
No data present at this time
Challenges
  • In NC teachers continue to encounter more and more mandatory professional development provided by the school system. They are describing professional development "fatigue" that saps their energy, enthusiasm, and time for the elective professional development, like PBL Institutes, that they would prefer to attend.
  • CERTL experienced the most attrition in teachers attending follow up sessions this past program year than in previous years. Questioning revealed more after school competition for teachers' time in standing committees such as the School Improvement Committee, more frequent faculty meetings with agendas about regulatory matters, and more demand to sponsor after school activities because there are more of these activities and previous sponsors are retiring.
Resources
  • Problem-Based Learning Institutes The PBL Institute and subsequent professional development programming is anchored in a philosophy of continuous professional development designed to address challenges in meaningful and on-going experiences with classroom teachers. Participating in this programming is designed for teachers to achieve a deep understanding of the PBL philosophy, principles, and strategies, and to offer a customized tier of opportunities designed specifically for sustainability. The first tier is five full days of professional development in the problem-based learning methodology. Elementary Teachers: June 25-29, 2007 Middle and High School Teachers: July 9-13, 2007 Center of Excellence for Research, Teaching, and Learning at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston Salem, NC 27157
  • The CERTL website, www.certl.org, has public areas that are intended to familiarize visitors with problem-based learning, CERTL programming, and applications to the CERTL student programs. Sample of PBL lesson plans are accessible in the public areas. Registered access is provided to all PBL trained teachers allowing access to 125 PBL downloadable lesson plans.
