Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources


Outcomes
  • To provide the opportunity for South Dakota native American and disadvantaged high school students to gain a more complete understanding of careers in health care areas
  • To demonstrate the linkage between the health care professions and the necessary linkages to the life sciences, physical sciences and behavioral sciences.
  • To establish a part of the education "pipeline" intended to help facillitate the entry of minority students in to the health care training programs at the University of South Dakota School of MedicineWe experienced
Challenges
  • There was experienced a decrease in the number of applicants for the EXPLORE program from previous years. There will be increased attempts to disseminate the application and information materials such as at high school Career Days, utilization of contacts through the area IHS, and other contacts within the reservation or school setting.
  • Acomplishing a comprehensive evaluation of the outcomes of the program. There is a need for ongoing survey of the students as to college plans, career plans. Need to set up and maintain a comprehensive database and a need to for a systematic evaluation of the program. There are currently attempts to set up and maintain the database and to do the program evaluation.
Resources
  • Upward Bound. Federally funded programs to encourage disadvantaged students in secondary and post-secondary education
  • Indians in to Medicine (INMED). A federally-funded health career education program located at the University of North Dakota. Primarily directed at professional level students but also has a summer canmp component for middle school and high school students
