Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
  • One outcome of the program has been that a former teacher participant has successfully implemented a summer and after school science program at the public school where he teaches.
  • The teacher participants have introduced more hands on science activities in their classrooms and help students make more correlations between everyday occurrences and scientific concepts.
  • Student carryover from one year to the next has been greater than 50% (in total) with all students who remain in the program for 5 summers being committed to pursuing careers in health or biomedicine.
Challenges
  • A major challenge has been to persuade potential participants to actually complete their applications (which includes having parental consent).
  • We were unable to keep some teacher participants in the program after the student segment was complete. One teacher left for vacation while two were instructed by their school district to attend a workshop. A portion of the stipend was deducted but this could not compensate for the disruption to the program.
  • A challenge has been retaining the master biology teacher. Such teachers are in high demand and are eager to improve their skills even further so they often have other opportunities.
Resources
  • The following web site has useful lesson plans that are printable. Grade levels range from Pre-K through 12th grade.
  • Science lessons along with ways to assess the progress of students with and without disabilities can be found ath
