Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
  • Improved the knowledge base of participating science teachers (K-12) through enrichment activities.
  • Familiarized the teachers with innovative teaching strategies that will motivate and make science more interesting to the students.
  • Reduce the costs of running scientific experiments in the classroom by making more use of our surroundings and easily accessible materials.
Challenges
  • Due to limited funds it was necessary to offer a shorter program. Selecting the best activities from among very good ones was very difficult. Need, cost, and teacher's satisfaction from evaluations were used to make the final decision.
  • Recruitment of teachers for a short program was difficult because of the competition with other programs. This was resolved by distributing applications to school officials directly.
  • Due to the limited time it was not possible to present teachers with enough methods and variety of experience.
Resources
  • Brain Exhibit- A faculty member of PSM Dr. Quirk, a neurophysiologist, and a couple of his graduate students visit a school once a year and give students a talk on the structure and function of the brain. They bring brains from several animals and demonstrate the section of the brain which controls a given function. Visual and written materials are also distributed.
  • Field visits- Field visits to educational places of interest (a wet forest, a dry forest, caverns and/or marine biology station) are conducted to study marine life versus weather and geological conditions. The diversity of plant life versus biological conditions are compared.
